SKETCHBOOK
Isaiah's personal studio practice is abstract and experimental. It is not grounded or consistent which is contrary to how he spends most of his working time as a designer. This creative outlet allows him to play and dabble without rigid parameters and deadlines. He describes his process as "scratching graphite to carve out a haunting, pressing idea."

Isaiah studies the dynamic qualities of change via the intersection of space and time. His work explores the existential qualities of pausing to notice one's specific location in time, in an ever-changing world. A hyper focus on the fleeting nature of human existence. Is honest introspection possible in a culture of incessant noise and consumption? Are the natural and synthetic compatible? Can anyone ever be present in reality anymore? How has the digital realm impacted the perception of geography and one's physical state of being? Are mind and body connected anymore? Can we toggle from the virtual to the physical sustainably without losing our minds?  What does it mean to be present? What does it mean to be human? What is real? What is illusion?

Isaiah equates the restless quality of change to the sea. Growing up 8 blocks from the ocean, Isaiah draws inspiration from his recollection of imagery along the shore: salt-soaked, blurry, billowing fog rolling in from the coast in the springtime evening. The movement of atmosphere in space over time. The simplicity of its dissipation and subtle, shifting ebb and flow. Undulation. Expanding and collapsing. A current of ever-changing, shapeshifting form. A sea of air blurring the visibility of the inhabitant. A pulsing rhythm. Movement. Growth and decay. The idea of getting lost in an object that can't actually be captured or contained. Losing oneself in nature until they realize that although they may be in proximity to human culture, they cannot actually embrace any of it. Visually, they are in a perpetual state of isolation and detachment. The illusion of connection in a false reality. Being around humanity and nature, yet never actually with them in any of it.

Happy scrolling.
